Feasibility study on implementation of zoning as means to control infectious diseases in aquaculture in Peru
Peru is one of the countries in the Americas with the greatest potential for aquaculture development for various species. However, the number of Peruvian exports (e.g. shrimp) can be limited due to the presence of certain diseases. This PPG, submitted by the National Fisheries Health Organization - SANIPES of Peru, aims to prepare a feasibility analysis (cost-benefit) to assess the potential impact and the technical and economic feasibility of implementing the international standards of the OIE and the FAO manuals on zoning as a tool to control infectious diseases for the social and economic development of white shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) aquaculture, in two producing departments (Piura and Tumbes) in Peru. The cost-benefit analysis will determine if the establishment and maintenance of the zoning for Peruvian shrimp is feasible and profitable. If this is the case, a roadmap will be prepared for the implementation of zoning in the country, including a detailed description of the resources needed in both the public and private sectors.
