Julio Pinto (DVM, PhD) joined the Animal Health Service in FAO in May 2006. Having graduated in Veterinary Science in the University of Chile in 1994, he completed his PhD studies in Veterinary Epidemiology and Economics at the University of Reading, United Kingdom, in 2000. Dr Pinto joined in 2003 the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) in Paris where he worked until 2006. Dr Pinto joined FAO in 2006 as an Animal Health Officer responsible for Global Early Warning, Risk Analysis and Surveillance of Animal Diseases including zoonosis. He has been leading the development of guidelines on risk assessment and value chains, economic analysis of animal diseases and surveillance for avian influenzas and leading the implementation of FAO projects on field epidemiology training programs for veterinarians, animal disease surveillance, risk assessment and development of animal health information systems and mobile technologies. He has been providing technical assistance to countries through: the design and implementation of animal disease control and participating in field outbreak investigations. He is currently based in FAO Office in Geneva to support One Health collaboration with WHO, other UN Organizations and on issues related to Livestock Sustainable Development and Trade with World Trade Organization/STDF.
