The Pre-Summit of the UN Food Systems Summit will set the stage for the Summit in September 2021 by bringing together diverse actors from around the world to leverage the power of food systems to deliver progress on all 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It will take place from 26-28 July 2021.

As part of the affiliated sessions, the joint FAO/WHO Codex Alimentarius Commission (Codex), the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) together with the Standards and Trade Development Facility (STDF) are organizing a 50-minute virtual discussion on: "Promoting sustainable food systems: the role of international standards". The aim is to share experiences with participants (e.g. academia, private sector and civil society) on why and how international standards matter in transforming food systems for the 21st century at the global, regional and national level.

Against a global backdrop of economic and climate change pressures that put livelihoods at risk, increasing support to farmers, processors, traders, exporters, and governments to meet international standards for food safety, animal and plant health is vital. Meeting these standards requires effective national food control, sanitary and phytosanitary systems, which in turn facilitates safe trade, increases production levels, improves public health, promotes food security, and protects the environment. The WTO SPS Agreement encourages WTO Members to use international standards as the basis for their SPS measures and explicitly recognizes three standard-setting bodies: (i) Codex for food safety standards; (ii) the OIE for animal health standards and zoonoses (diseases that can be transmitted from animals to humans); and (iii) the IPPC for plant health standards.
