Cocoa farming in Cameroon has been adversely affected by poor agricultural practices, including the application of unregistered pesticides (fungicides and insecticides) containing active ingredients banned in Cameroon and other countries. The harvested cocoa beans often exceed the maximum residue limits.

A 2012 survey identified that out of the 35 pesticides available in Cameroon, eight were banned, and over 50% of farmers did not adhere to recommended frequencies or dosages for application. Substandard fermentation, storage, and drying techniques, coupled with undesirable moisture levels and smoky odours in beans at destination markets, have further compromised the quality of Cameroon's cocoa.
